Puzzle boards and tables

Give the puzzle a home that isn't the dining table. A board lets you lift the whole build and move it, edge pieces and all.

What to look for

  • Size first. Check the piece count it fits. A 1000-piece puzzle is often around 27 x 20 in, and a 2000-piece one needs a lot more room. The puzzle's box lists its finished size.
  • Tilt or flat. A tilting easel brings the picture toward you, which some puzzlers find easier on the neck. Flat boards are simpler and slide under a sofa.
  • Drawers and covers. Drawers hold sorted pieces. A cover keeps out dust, cats and curious cousins.
  • Weight and storage. Check the weight if you'll carry it between rooms, and whether it folds or stands on its side.
  • Turntables. A spinning base lets you work on the far side without walking around the table.

Roll-up puzzle mats

The cheapest way to pause a puzzle. Build on the felt, roll it around the tube, and get the table back for dinner.

What to look for

  • Felt size. Get a mat bigger than the finished puzzle. The maker lists the most pieces it fits.
  • The tube. Inflatable or expanding tubes roll without crushing pieces. Straps keep the roll closed.
  • Roll gently. Pieces can shift if you roll tight or fast, so roll slowly, and keep loose pieces in a tray, not on the mat edge.

Sorting trays

Edges here, sky there, that one weird red piece over there. Trays turn a heap into a plan.

What to look for

  • How many. Six or seven trays is common, enough for edges plus a few colors.
  • Stacking or nesting. Stacking trays with a lid keep sorted pieces put overnight. Nesting trays save shelf space.
  • Material. Plastic wipes clean. Cardboard is lighter and some are made from recycled board.
  • Size. Check the outer size against your table. Small trays fit around a board without crowding it.

  • Jigsaw Pro sorting trays

7 interlocking trays with a lid. One set holds up to 1000 pieces.

Puzzle glue and savers

Finished and too proud to break it up? Glue or a saver sheet holds it together for hanging or framing.

What to look for

  • Glue or sheets. Brush-on glue coats the front and seals it. Peel-and-stick sheets go on the back, so the front stays as printed.
  • Enough for your puzzle. Check the bottle size against the puzzle's area. Bigger puzzles may need more than one bottle or several sheets.
  • Test first. Some glues add a little shine. Try a corner or a spare piece before you coat the whole thing.
  • Wax paper. Put wax paper or parchment under the puzzle so it doesn't glue itself to the table.

Puzzle frames

The last piece. A frame turns a finished puzzle into wall art.

What to look for

  • Measure the finished puzzle. Box sizes are approximate. Measure the real thing before you order.
  • Glued or glue-free. Most frames need a glued puzzle. Some hold loose pieces between two clear panels.
  • What's included. Check for the clear cover, backing and hanging hardware. Some frames leave out the cover.
  • Made for one brand. Some frames only fit that brand's puzzles. Read the fine print.

Questions

What puzzle accessories do I actually need?

None to start. A table and a box lid will do. The first upgrade most people add is a way to pause the puzzle, like a roll-up mat or a board, then sorting trays. Glue and frames only matter if you want to keep the finished picture.

What size board do I need for a 1000-piece puzzle?

Bigger than the finished puzzle, with room around it. Many 1000-piece puzzles finish around 27 x 20 in, but sizes vary, so check the box. Boards and mats list the most pieces they fit.

Are roll-up puzzle mats worth it?

They're the cheapest way to clear the table mid-puzzle. Roll slowly so pieces don't shift, and keep loose pieces in a tray.

Puzzle glue or peel-and-stick sheets?

Glue coats the front and can add shine. Sheets stick to the back, so the front stays as printed. Either works for hanging or framing. See our framing guide.

Can I frame a puzzle without glue?

Yes, with a frame that presses the pieces between two clear panels. Liberty Puzzles sells frames like that. Most other frames expect a glued puzzle.

Did you test these?

No. We picked them from the makers' own stores and repeat only what their product pages say. Prices and stock come from each store's feed on the date shown.

Do you earn money from these links?

Some. Links to Puzzle Ready and WerkShoppe are affiliate links, marked sponsored. The other stores are plain links. You pay the same either way. Details.
