Pick the right photo

Illustrated example of a good puzzle photo: sharp and bright, with a house, a tree, flowers and balloons filling the frame
βœ“ Puzzles wellSharp, bright, lots of detail, subject in the middle.
Illustrated example of a hard puzzle photo: blurry, mostly plain sky, the house cut off at the edge and tiny text
βœ— Puzzles badlyBlurry, mostly plain sky, subject cut off at the edge, tiny text.
  • Sharp and bright. Use the original file, not a screenshot or a photo sent through a chat app, which can shrink it. Many makers warn you if a photo is too small for the size you picked.
  • Lots of detail, little empty space. Faces, colors and textures are easy to sort. Big stretches of sky, snow, sea or a plain wall are pretty but hard.
  • Mind the crop. The puzzle's shape may not match your photo. Keep faces away from the edges so nobody loses an ear.
  • Collage for more people. Several photos in a grid give every face a spot, and they're easier to solve. Not every maker offers collages.
  • Add words carefully. A name or date can be sweet. Small text gets cut through by piece edges, so keep it large.

How many pieces, by age

A rough guide. The photo matters too: a busy photo plays easier than a calm one with the same piece count.

  • Ages 3 to 5 30

The smallest sizes, around 30 big pieces, with a simple, bright photo.

  • Ages 6 to 8 60–200

    About 60 to 200 pieces.

  • Ages 8 to 12 200–500

    About 200 to 500 pieces.

  • Teens and adults 500–1,000

500 for an evening or two, 1000 for a proper project.

  • Puzzle fans 1,000–2,000

1000 and up. A 2000-piece photo puzzle is a big commitment, so pick a photo with lots of detail.

  • Grandparents

Match their usual puzzles. If small pieces or eyesight are a worry, fewer, bigger pieces are kinder.

Pieces, on a stretched scale so small counts still show. A rough guide, not a rule.

Order early

  • Made to order. Each puzzle is printed and cut after you order, then shipped. That takes longer than grabbing a box off a shelf.
  • December is slow. Makers and carriers get busy before the holidays. Check the maker's own holiday order-by date before you order.
  • Leave time for a redo. If the proof looks off or the photo is too small, you'll want time to fix it.
  • Cutting it close? A store-bought puzzle on a theme they love ships faster. See our puzzle gift guides.

Ideas by occasion

πŸŽ„ Christmas

The year in pieces. A collage of the year's best photos works well for a family puzzle on Christmas afternoon. Make one each year and it's a tradition.

πŸ’ Weddings and anniversaries

A wedding photo, the place you met, or a collage of the years. For anniversaries, some couples puzzle it together and then frame it. See how to frame a puzzle.

πŸ•―οΈ In memory

A favorite photo of someone missed, or a pet. Pick a clear, happy photo and a comfortable piece count. Putting it together can be a quiet thing to share. Gluing and framing it keeps it.

πŸ‘΅ For grandparents

The grandkids, in pieces. A collage of grandchildren is a classic. Choose a piece count they'll enjoy, not one that makes them squint.

Questions

How many pieces should a custom photo puzzle have?

For most adults, 500 to 1000. For young kids, the smallest sizes, around 30 big pieces. Busy photos with lots of detail suit higher counts; simple photos suit fewer pieces.

What kind of photo makes the best puzzle?

A sharp, bright photo with lots of color and detail across the whole picture. Big areas of plain sky or wall make it much harder.

Can I use more than one photo?

Yes, with a collage layout. Shutterfly and Snapfish offer collages. Ravensburger's custom puzzle uses one photo.

When should I order a custom puzzle for Christmas?

Early. Custom puzzles are made to order, so you wait for printing and then shipping, and both slow down in December. Check the maker's own holiday order-by dates before you order.

Can I use a phone photo?

Usually, if it's the original, full-size file. Many makers warn you at upload if a photo is too small for the size you picked.

Can I frame a photo puzzle?

Yes. Glue it or use saver sheets, then frame it. See how to frame a jigsaw puzzle.

Do you get paid for these links?
