How long does a puzzle take?
Pick the piece count, how often you puzzle, how hard the picture looks and who's helping. You'll get a time range and how many evenings that is. It's an estimate built on real timed solves, not a promise.

Quick answer
A 1000-piece puzzle takes most casual puzzlers about 5โ10 hours, or 3โ5 evenings of 2 hours each. A 500-piece puzzle takes about 1.5โ3.5 hours. Timed puzzlers on MySpeedPuzzling finish 1000 pieces in a median 3 hours 15 minutes. Hard pictures take longer, and two people are faster but not twice as fast.

Quick reference: how long puzzles take

Active puzzling time. 3,000 and 5,000 pieces are extended from the 2,000-piece data, so treat them as rough.
How we estimate
This is an estimate. Here is exactly what goes in:
- Base time: the median solo time for each piece count from MySpeedPuzzling, where puzzlers time real solves (1000 pieces: 3 hr 15 min across about 19,500 solves; 500 pieces: 1 hr 4 min). We connect their sizes from 100 to 2,000 pieces into a smooth curve.
- Speed puzzler: set by the 2025 USA Jigsaw Nationals final. The 500-piece winner took 40 min 34 s, and the top 30 finished within about 51 minutes.
- Regular: the middle half of MySpeedPuzzling solo times (2 hr 25 min to 4 hr 28 min for 1000 pieces).
- Casual and beginner: matched to published guides: Everything Jigsaw (500 pieces 2 to 8 hours, 1000 pieces 5 to 15 hours) and Ravensburger (1000 pieces 10 to 15 hours, 1500 pieces 12 to 25, 2000 pieces 15 to 30).
- People: MySpeedPuzzling's group times. On 1000 pieces, 2 people are 1.8 times as fast as one, 3 people 2.2 times and 4 people 3.2 times. On 500 pieces the gain is smaller (2 people 1.4 times).
- Picture: our own rough adjustment (easy 15% faster, hard 40% slower). Both sources say the picture can add hours, but nobody publishes a number for it.
Checked Oct 24, 2026. Over 2,000 pieces there's little timed data, so we extend the curve.

Questions
How long does a 1000 piece puzzle take?
For a casual puzzler with an average picture, our estimate is 5โ10 hours, or 3โ5 evenings of 2 hours each. A beginner may need 9โ15 hours, someone who puzzles often 2.5โ4.5 hours. Ravensburger says to plan on 10 to 15 hours. On MySpeedPuzzling, where people time themselves, the median solo time is 3 hours 15 minutes.
How long does a 500 piece puzzle take?
About 1.5โ3.5 hours at a relaxed pace, or 50โ90 minutes if you puzzle often. Everything Jigsaw allows 2 to 8 hours. The median timed solo solve on MySpeedPuzzling is 1 hour 4 minutes, and the 2025 USA Jigsaw Nationals winner took 40 minutes 34 seconds.
How long does a 2000 piece puzzle take?
Plan on 17โ35 hours at a casual pace, so it's a project for a couple of weeks of evenings. Ravensburger says 15 to 30 hours.
Is a puzzle faster with two people?
Yes, but not twice as fast. Timed pairs on MySpeedPuzzling finish a 1000-piece puzzle 1.8 times as fast as one person, and teams of four about 3.2 times as fast. For a casual 1000-piece puzzle that's about 3โ5.5 hours with two people and 1.5โ3.5 hours with four.
What makes a puzzle take longer?
The picture matters as much as the piece count. Big areas of sky, water, gradients or repeating patterns are slow. Bright, busy pictures with lots of different details go faster. A good light, a big table and sorting trays help.
How accurate is this calculator?
It's an estimate, not a promise. The base times are real timed solves from people who track their puzzling, and the ranges come from published guides. Your own time can be well outside the range, and that's fine.
