Quick answer

Most 1000-piece puzzles finish about 19.7 x 26.2 inches (50 x 67 cm), about 3.6 square feet of table. Brands differ: Ravensburger 19.7 x 27.6 in, Buffalo Games 19.75 x 26.75 in, White Mountain 24 x 30 in. Use a board or mat a few inches bigger than the puzzle. Plan on 10 to 15 hours, says Ravensburger. Measure the finished puzzle before you buy a frame.

Will it fit your table?

Check the finished size against the space you really have, not the box size. A typical 1000-piece puzzle needs about 23.7 x 30.2 in once you add room to work.

Uses this page's typical 1000-piece size and the board size from the chart (2 in on every side).

  • Measure the usable space. Measure inside any raised edge on a board or tray.
  • Add room on every side. About 2 in per side, plus space for loose pieces.
  • Try it both ways. A wide puzzle may fit a narrow table if you turn it.
  • Use the exact puzzle's size. Two 1000-piece puzzles can differ by several inches, so read the box or product page.

Questions

How big is a 1000-piece puzzle?

Most finish about 19.7 x 26.2 in (50 x 67 cm). Across 69 brands we checked, the typical size runs from 17.7 x 24.8 in up to 24 x 31.5 in. Brands with bigger pieces, like White Mountain and Springbok, make the big end. The box lists the exact size.

What size board or mat do I need for a 1000-piece puzzle?

Get one a few inches bigger than the puzzle on every side. For a typical 1000-piece puzzle that means about 23.7 x 30.2 in or more. A 24 x 30 in White Mountain puzzle needs a bigger board than a Cobble Hill one. Leave room for loose pieces, too.

What size frame for a 1000-piece puzzle?

Measure your finished puzzle first. A typical one fits a 20 x 27 in frame. Ravensburger's 1000-piece size (about 70 x 50 cm) fits a 50 x 70 cm frame. White Mountain and Springbok puzzles need a 24 x 30 in frame. See our framing guide.

How long does a 1000-piece puzzle take?

Ravensburger says plan on 10 to 15 hours, and Everything Jigsaw says 5 to 15. Fast, timed puzzlers on MySpeedPuzzling finish in a median of 3 hours 15 minutes. A hard picture, like lots of sky, takes longer. Get your own estimate with the puzzle time calculator.

How big is a 500-piece puzzle?

A typical 500-piece puzzle finishes about 16 x 20 in (41 x 51 cm), small enough for a coffee table. Sizes vary a lot: some brands make 500-piece puzzles as big as a 1000-piece one, with bigger pieces.

How big is a 2000-piece puzzle?

About 26.6 x 39.3 in (68 x 100 cm) is typical. That covers most of a dining table, so many people use a big mat or board.

Is every 1000-piece puzzle the same size?

No. Piece count tells you how many pieces, not how big. Brands cut pieces in different sizes and shapes, and square or panoramic puzzles have their own sizes.

Where do these sizes come from?

From the finished sizes the makers print on their own product pages, plus sizes Ravensburger and Springbok publish. "Typical" means the size most of a brand's puzzles use. It is not a promise, so check the box.

Where the numbers come from

  • Sizes: the finished size printed on each puzzle's own product page at the maker's store (Buffalo Games, White Mountain, Galison, Dowdle (Boardwalk), New York Puzzle Company, JIGGY, eeBoo, Mudpuppy, MasterPieces and more), and at Puzzledly for brands like Cobble Hill. Box and poster sizes don't count.
  • Ravensburger: How big is a jigsaw puzzle?, its puzzle FAQ, and its 3000 and 5000-piece pages.
  • Springbok: its 1000-piece puzzles page (24 x 30 in).
  • Time: MySpeedPuzzling (timed solo solves), Ravensburger, and Everything Jigsaw.
  • Board and frame: our rule of thumb. The board adds 2 in on every side. The frame is the smallest standard size that fits.
